The season isn’t over yet. Indianapolis’s No. 18 and the rest of the Colts crew are set to play the New York Jets at 8 p.m. this Saturday, January 10 in their very own Lucas Oil Stadium. And we aren’t just talking about the football season; we’re talking about tailgating season, too! Whether you’re going to the game or not, we can all enjoy the playoff activities with a tailgate party. Not attending the game? You can throw it at home in backyard or driveway. It’s similar enough to that extra large lot across from the Slippery Noodle – right?

There are three simple ingredients to a successful tailgate: good food, good drinks and friendly competition. Let us break it down for you:

Good Food

Let’s take basic tailgate grub – hot dogs – and spruce it up a little to create a nice “hot dog bar”. Think of a salad bar but with the perfect toppings to go on that hot-diggity-dog. Organize the bar with buns first, then hot dogs, toppings and finally the condiments. Here are some suggestions:

Breads: whole wheat buns, white buns, footlong buns (if needed)
The Dog: beef, turkey
Toppings: coleslaw, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, pickles, chili, sauerkraut, chopped onion, green olives, sweet pickle relish (or slices), dill pickle relish (or slices), diced tomato, shredded cheese, olives, jalapeno pepper slices
Condiments: ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, hot sauce, barbecue sauce

This is a classic and inexpensive option that leaves room for your tailgaters to get creative. Serve them with an array of sides, like chips, macaroni & cheese and baked beans.

Good Drinks

Bundle up! It’s going to be a chilly evening on Saturday, which is just one more reason to have a tasty drink in hand. We say hot chocolate is the perfect treat. Too simple? Not at all. Add some whipped cream and vanilla vodka and you have yourself a cocktail that keeps you all warm and toasty right up until kickoff!

Friendly Competition

Yes, we suggest friendly interaction between Colts and Jets fans, but that not exactly what we’re referring to here to complete the tailgate. The perfect game for friendly competition? Cornhole, of course! Bring out your set for a little pre-game activity. We are from Indiana, aren’t we?
