The History of the Hilton Garden Inn
There is so much history that is a part of the Hilton Garden Inn – Indianapolis Downtown. It first started as the Fletcher Savings and Trust Building and has been preserved over the years to allow future generations to enjoy its unique structure. The Fletcher Savings and Trust Building, completed in 1914, was significant as an outstanding example of not only its neoclassical style of architecture, but also as one of early Indianapolis’ skyscrapers. At 16 stories tall, it was one of the tallest buildings in the cityscape of Indianapolis for the period. Unique at the time for its steel frame construction, the building is faced entirely in Bedford limestone, except for the first three stories which are faced in Crotch Island Granite.Planning and design for the structure began in 1912 by prominent Indianapolis architect, Arthur Bohn. Bohn moved to Indianapolis with his family when he was a boy. As a young man, he studied architecture at the Royal Polytechnic Institute in Germany. Upon completion of his studies, he formed a partnership with Bernard Vonnegut in 1888. The architectural team of Vonnegut and Bohn went on to design many of Indianapolis’ finest buildings including the Athenaeum Theatre, Delaware Street Temple and the All Souls Unitarian Church. Vonnegut passed away in 1908, prior to the Fletcher Savings and Trust Company Building, but his legacy lived on in the firm as his son, Kurt Vonnegut, Sr., had joined the team and continued the partnership.
In 2002, a major renovation of the Fletcher Savings and Trust Company Building began to restore the structure to its original grandeur, opening in 2003 as the Hilton Garden Inn Indianapolis – Downtown. This adoptive utilization of the building made the preservation of this unique structure possible. With special attention to historic preservation when possible, the building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Hilton Garden Inn has been used for many different types of social events including weddings, fundraisers, fashion shows, conferences and more.
